Meet the Team: Alyssa, PR + Web Design Director
She may look like Emma Stone but Alyssa Evans acts like Peggy Olson. All true Mad Meg fanatics know that Don has his moments but it’s the consistency, work ethic, and leadership of Peggy that keeps Sterling Cooper running.
“Maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s an instagram filter” is the type of cute copy that Peggy would come up with today but it’s Alyssa that embodies the line as there’s no doubt she was born with the scrappiness that makes her so successful. Alyssa just figures it out whether it’s new software or new shelves that need assembly, she digs in and gets it done.
Like Peggy, Alyssa brings a level-headed composure to whatever she’s doing. Whether its proposals or parties – you can count on Alyssa’s discernment. “Am I the only one that can work and drink at the same time?” Peggy once famously asked when her colleagues were getting rowdy in the office. And the answer is “no”. No Peggy – Alyssa can do that too.
Lys, Nene (a name given by my mom to both my dog and I), Lupita, Peggy Peg Legs, Peppermint Patty and Emma Stone.
How did you get started at Mad Meg?
I found Mad Meg while interning at My Red Glasses. Megan happened to be BFFs with the editor of the blog at the time, Julie Weinstein. Fate or nepotism? Maybe a bit of both (I take neither for granted). I didn't study public relations in college or have any experience in that field, so this was definitely a leap of faith. But, I just celebrated my 2 year work anniversary so obviously something went right! I'd like to consider myself the O.G. of Mad Meg.
Whats up with you and animals?
I've grown up around animals my entire life. I've never not had an pet, whether its a cat, dog, parakeet, frog, gerbil or crab named Grumpy. For some reason, animals flock to me anywhere I go (as you see above in Discovery Green). I'm like a modern day Noah. It's a gift. Or curse, as most animals happen to end up in my home permanently about 90% of the time. My mother also happens to be somewhat of an animal rights "hippie" if you will, so its definitely genetic.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
A zoologist. Surprise surprise. But, until I miraculously become good at science I will be using my skills for the greater good of PR and Web Design. P.S. At the age of 3 I wanted to be a garbage man, so maybe a garbage truck mogul?
Favorite part of your job?
My team, hands down. They make me want to come to work every day. Working with people who you consider to be your best friends and people you see being in your life for a very long time...doesn't get any better.
What's one piece of advice you would give to someone who has no clue what they want to do?
Internships. Internships. Internships. You won't know what you like and don't like unless you try it. Don't panic - you'll figure it out eventually. Be patient with yourself and know that your path may lead you in different directions. Embrace it.
It's Saturday in Houston, where would you be spotted?
I love a good brunch - Empire Cafe is by far my favorite place to be on a Saturday morning. They have massive mimosas and the atmosphere is super casual. During the day, I love to go house hunting. (Browsing HAR is my favorite pastime btw.) My boyfriend Jon is in the market for a new place and open houses are so much fun. They are even better if we're still tipsy from the mimosas at brunch. If we aren't househunting, I love to try a new workout class with my Classpass membership. If we are feeling wild, we may go out for dinner to Sushi Wabi or Docs, but we love to stay in and cook and watch movies. Jon and I are also creatures of habit, so we are trying to be better at going to new restaurants. We're terrible. Bed by 10, duh.
Finally, tell me one weird thing about you.
I like all of my food and drinks SUPER hot. I microwave my coffee at least 20 times a day. Lukewarm coffee is terrible.
